Style on the Runway the Fashion Event of the Season

October 12th, 2011 • Posted by Scott Brainard • Permalink

October 2nd saw what many are calling the event not to have been missed. David Alexander Salon along with Stepping Out for Breast Cancer organized a charity hair and fashion show, Style on the Runway (http://www.styleontherunway.com) to benefit two local Annapolis breast cancer non-profit organizations.

The first, METAvivor, helps women who are currently living with stage IV breast cancer. The second, the Anne Arundel Medical Center Breast Center, is creating a Survivorship Program for patients in remission.

The show featured more than 50 models in 5 collections. One collection was solely comprised of women with metastatic breast cancer or in remission.

More than 340 people attended the show and we are excited to say that we raised more than $80,000! A big thanks to all the volunteers for helping and all the guests for supporting such an amazing event!

New Smoothing Treatment

Say Goodbye to Brazilian Keratin/Smoothing Treatments!

As you know we discontinued Brazilian Keratin/Smoothing treatments for the health and safety of our staff and clients. We were as disappointed as you because we saw how amazingly they worked.

This entire time we have been looking for a replacement that was as effective, and safe to apply. In fact, we think what we found is actually better.

Our new treatment has the advantage over keratin treatments in that there is no smell or gases that escape, you can shampoo immediately without the 3-4 day waiting period, and you can color your hair the same day as the smoothing treatment.

The application and process is similar. It requires 2-3 hours. The treatment will last 8-12 weeks. But, the results are superior. We already have clients commenting that their hair is actually softer and silkier than when they had the keratin treatment done.

We would love to introduce you to this service. I am sure you will love it even more than our old treatment.

Call now to book an appointment, 410 224 0519!

INOA at David Alexander featured in Capital Style Magazine

We recently had the opportunity to host a local reporter for the Capital Gazette newspaper for an afternoon. She was on assignment to find out more about INOA hair color from L'Oreal. We took her through an entire INOA service with the participation from one of our generous clients. Needless to say she was impressed, and that is reflected in her article. Style On The Runway Charity Hair and Fashion Show

May 6th, 2011 • Posted by Scott Brainard • Permalink

There are few organizations in the country specifically dedicated to helping people diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer, and none at a national level. In fact, of all the money for research and treatment, less than 2% is geared to the stage IV cancer patient. Yet they are the most likely to require the most expensive treatments and highest levels of care.

For the 70% of patients whose cancer does not metastasize and remains in remission after treatment has ended, the fear of metastasis makes it difficult for some to return to normal life. For patients needing additional assistance, there are few local resources they can turn to for emotional support, counseling or education on maintaining health and wellness.

Helping these women and men starts in our communities, our cities and our towns.

We have committed to making a difference in the quality of life of these patients by raising $100,000 at our inaugural hair and fashion show fundraiser in Annapolis, Maryland on October 2, 2011 for the women and men in our community.

We are asking you to support our mission by donating today.

The event will feature a hair and fashion runway show including models that have experienced breast cancer. Local boutiques are donating the fashions and accessories and David Alexander Salon and Spa is contributing the hair styling and make-up services. In addition to the runway show, the afternoon will include local restaurants that are donating gourmet food stations, a live auction, educational booths, music and entertainment.

The first beneficiary of the show is METAvivor Research and Support, a non-profit organization comprised solely of persons with stage IV breast cancer (METAvivor = metastatic survivor). Members are dedicated to helping each other cope with unending treatments, side effects and emotional challenges.

Metastatic breast cancer is a devastating diagnosis for all men and women who face it. However, it is particularly tragic for those with young children. Among the services METAvivor offers is legacy production assistance for these individuals to create a lasting memorial for their children. METAvivor volunteers help them record video messages and create scrapbooks so that their children have enduring memories of their mom or dad.

The second beneficiary of the event is the Anne Arundel Medical Center Breast Center, a unit of our county hospital that supports 30,000 women and men who are battling or who have battled breast cancer.

Their Survivorship Program helps the patient transition out of successful treatment and back into regular life. It brings together a team to provide education, psychosocial support, and counseling on maintaining health and wellness after successful treatment.

Your support of our event will have a significant and immediate impact on the lives of hundreds of women and men in our community.   Go to www.styleontherunway.com for more information.

Some Tips on Men's Skin Care

February 17th, 2011 • Posted by Scott Brainard • Permalink

A man's skin is approximately 15% thicker than a woman's, and is generally firmer, showing signs of aging less rapidly. However, once the aging process begins, typically around the age of 40, collagen and elastin production decreases dramatically causing the skin to show rapid and visible signs of aging with the emergence of deep wrinkles. Effective skin care can slow and reduce aging, restoring firmness and elasticity to the skin.

Active sebaceous glands cause men's skin to be oilier with larger pores and a richer blood supply. Regular deep cleansing is a necessity to maintain a healthy complexion. Men’s skin is also more prone to be dehydrated due to daily or frequent shaving. No matter your skin type, it is important to maintain a regular skin care regimen to keep pores clear, and skin vibrant and healthy looking.

Cleansing
Daily face cleansing will keep pores unclogged, which in turn can reduce a variety of skin conditions. Common problems facing men include pimples, ingrown hairs, and blackheads, which can leave discolored marks on the skin's surface.

Regular bar soaps are detergent-based and can strip delicate facial skin of necessary moisture, leaving it dry and flaky. Use of a light conditioning facial cleanser, free of harsh chemicals, will maintain a healthy moisture balance and preserve softness.

Exfoliating
Exfoliation is a crucial part of any skin care regimen for men. It rids the skin of dead skin cell build up that can cause skin to appear thick and dull while helping to dislodge ingrown hairs from beneath the upper layers of the skin.

Abuse and trauma caused by regular shaving makes the skin work harder to produce excess skin cells in an effort to protect and repair itself. It is crucial to pay close attention to the shave area when exfoliating in order to remove excess buildup of skin cells, eliminate and release ingrown hairs, and reduce the occurrence of razor bumps.

Shaving
The best time to shave is in, or immediately following, a shower or cleansing. Wash the face and neck thoroughly in warm/hot water prior to shaving for easier hair removal. Alternatively, you can apply a hot moist towel to the face for 2 to 3 minutes prior to shaving in order to soften the skin. The warmth of the towel swells the hair shaft, allowing the blade to cut the hair, not your skin.

Always use a sharp blade. A dull blade is responsible for many shaving cuts as it drags over the face and catches the skin along with the hairs of the beard. Rinse the blade in warm water often, as this will keep the skin moist, soft and less prone to damage. Use short even strokes rather than long strokes to achieve a smoother shave.

A lot of foam and lather is not necessary for a great shaving experience. Many grocery and drug store shave creams contain harsh chemicals that “foam up” the product. Some of these foaming agents can be irritants that may cause an allergic reaction or skin irritation.

Moisturizing
Regular shaving causes men’s skin to experience a significant amount of dehydration. Regular use of a good moisturizer prevents moisture loss in the top layer of the skin, promotes water retention and replenishes lost moisture.

A good face moisturizer should be rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins, nutrients (anti-oxidants), botanical extracts, emollients and oils. These ingredients help to prevent skin damage caused by the sun, pollutants, lifestyle and other environmental factors.

Body Care
The skin on the body is just as important as the skin on the face and therefore deserves the same amount of care and attention. Daily use of a good body wash and lotion is essential to maintaining healthy, conditioned skin.
